2018 Harp Events
Saturday, February 17th from 2-4 p.m.--Our new year begins with a Valentine's Day celebration! We will gather at Mary Bouley's home (central Tucson) to play solos or duets with a love theme. Any type of harp is welcome. Mary will provide beverages and snacks. Please wear red or pink for this event.
Thursday, February 22 at 7 p.m.--Harpist Claire Thai will be in recital at the home of Chris Vivona. She will be playing virtuosic pieces from advanced harp repertoire including "Au Matin" by Tournier, "Sonata in c minor" by Pescetti, "Danse de Lutins" by Renie and "Variations on a Theme in an Ancient Style" by Salzedo in preparation for auditions at the Julliard and Curtis. A reception will follow her performance.
Saturday, March 10th from 11-1 p.m.--SOPHIA's St. Patrick's celebration returns! We will meet to play Irish songs from Tunes to Go in an informal ensemble and will share an Irish-themed lunch. Wear green for this fun event!
Saturday April 14th from 2-4 p.m.--SOPHIA's annual formal spring recital will take place in April! Harp solos or duets will be performed; any type of acoustic harp is welcome. Location: Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft in their Fellowship Hall. Refreshments will follow at the conclusion of the performances. This is a great opportunity to perform in a formal setting in front of an appreciative audience!
Saturday, May 5th from 11-1 p.m.---"Sophiesta" returns! We will meet at Celeste's house as an informal ensemble to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by playing Latin harp music from Tunes to Go as well as from sheet music. Latin solos are welcome. We will also share a Mexican-themed luncheon.
Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m.--World-class lever harpist, Sunita Staneslow, will be performing in a house concert! A reception will follow during which her CD's and music books will be available for purchase. Advance tickets are $15. An RSVP is required; no exceptions, as seating is very limited. Update: This concert is sold out!
Saturday, September 22 from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.--Sunita will be giving two workshops entitled, "The Art of the Descending Bass Line" and "The Art of the Arpeggio". Attendees need to bring their harps, stands and chairs. A lunch break will be provided.
Saturday, October 13th from 4-6 p.m.--U of A harp professor Michelle Gott will be performing in a chamber recital at Holsclaw Hall. Works by Debussy will be included. Admission is free! SOPHIA members will also meet for dinner at a restaurant following her performance.
Sunday, November 4th from 10-10:45 a.m.--SOPHIA will be performing at the Tucson Celtic Festival!
Sunday, December 9th at 5 p.m.--SOPHIA will also be performing at the Winterhaven Festival of Lights in an informal ensemble format. We will be playing Christmas songs from Tunes to Go. Solos are also welcome, as are all types of harps! A potluck supper will also be served and there will be time set aside to walk the neighborhood to experience the fantastic light displays for Christmas.
